program note: Confessions is an ensemble-specific interdisciplinary work, built from pre-recorded materials created by the performers of FES Ensemble themselves. Video footage of their interviews, rehearsals, and the surrounding Rotterdam neighbourhood - where the ensemble lives - enters into dialogue with the live instrumental voices, giving rise to a counterpoint between the performative time of the present and the temporal space of the film. What has been said, played, or filmed returns as trace, echo, confession. Performer and mediated material mirror, question, and contradict one another, suspended between memory and act. The result is a dramaturgy of intimacy, in which sound, body, and image converse with each other. The title hides the ensemble's name, folding the group's identity into the very act of confession, and turning the piece into a self-portrait of FES.
